Cape Cod Fishing Hot Spots

by Captain Ryan Collins

Cape Cod is one of the top striped bass fishing destinations along the East Coast. Certain beaches fish better than other beaches depending on the time of the year. For folks fishing during the spring run, knowing which beaches produce best can help to put more striped bass onto the sand. Falmouth's Old Silver beach is an early May hot spot for small and keeper size striped bass.

In the spring, the south side of Cape Cod and Buzzard's Bay experiences an influx of striped bass before Cape Cod Bay and points north. Many of the best shore bound spots are located in close proximity to bays, creeks and harbors. Focusing your striped bass fishing efforts in these areas can help get your striper season started on the right foot.

Old Silver is home to a herring run, a stretch of sand, and a boulder strewn section of beach. To the north is a calm back bay and to the south a rocky point. All this structure creates a unique hunting opportunity for opportunistic striped bass.

The majority of my striper fishing time is centered around the rocky outcroppings to the north. This is a phenomenal and exciting area for light tackle anglers.

A fairly long walk is required to access these boulders, yet the walk is almost always worth the effort.

Be sure to check the tide before heading down to Old Silver. The best time to fish the boulder field is immediately before and after low tide.

Top water plugs and pencil poppers in particular seem to work best around the rocks. Aside from being productive, top water plugs elicit awesome top water strikes from these early season bass.

A tranquil back bay can be found around the corner of the northernmost tip of Old Silver beach. The channel entering the bay is one of the most productive striped bass fishing spots along the entire stretch of shore.

Just be sure to keep close tabs on the tide when fishing the rocky outcropping. This is definitely not a spot where you want to push the limits with the tide.

I've had my best striped bass fishing success at Old Silver during early to mid May. The majority of stripers caught will be schoolies and small keepers however there are on occasion a few bigger bass mixed in. These fish put up a fantastic fight. Especially when they are caught on light tackle.

Once in a while a few small bluefish will wander into the area along with the bass. If blues are more your thing, then consider heading to South Cape Beach in Mashpee.
