Cherry Picking In The Yarra Valley
I am such a good God-mother you know. My God children are coming to stay with me in the Yarra Valley in 2 weeks time from Sydney, so I have booked online for us to go cherry picking at Cherryhill Orchards over at Wandin East.
It's a fun, outdoorsy, healthy thing to do with them and their mother and father are excited "because going cherry picking will result in the children eating fruit for fun (a rarity) "and it is not something they can do where they live in the city, so they're really excited.
We'll take a picnic (my God children eat a lot and frequently and lose concentration if I don't feed them continually) and find a nice shady tree to sit under. I'm convinced most kids think cherries come from supermarkets not trees, so it will be tutorial as well as fun. I'm not sure how many cherries will make it into the basket mind you! There'll be purple fingers and stained faces by the end of the day.
I think a tiny bit of their excitement about going to the orchards might be connected to the fact that I mentioned we're going to have ice cream when we finish picking. And that the orchard has a dog called Barry, they're especially anticipating meeting Barry and eating ice cream. In actual fact cherry ice cream will be a welcome reward for all that picking and they handily sell it there at the orchards. In light of that, we're taking an esky, (a large one) because seemingly cherries keep better if you cool them as quickly as you have picked them and we may need a spot of room in the esky for a little (or not so little?) take home tub of cherry ice cream too!
There are many farm gates in the Yarra Valley, including Cherries, Berries, and Stonefruit among others.
