Everything You Should Find Out About Camping Sleeping Bags

by Todd Claydon

Camping in the great outdoors remains one of the most popular activities for people in all walks of life to enjoy and camping sleeping bags are an integral part of the gear you will need. Whether you are backpacking through the mountains, taking a family vacation in a camper, or going for a weekend trip to sleep under the stars in a tent, traveling light is of the utmost importance. And, there are a few different factors to keep in mind when it comes to choosing from the three different types of camping sleeping bags available today; rectangular, mummy, and tapered.

Rectangular bags are the most popular forms of camping sleeping bags. They are rectangular in shape and the widest of the three types of sleeping bags. They can be zipped thus acting like blankets. In addition, you can zip two rectangular sleeping bags together to form a double sleeping bag, large enough for two people. These bags are often light and can easily be rolled up to fit into the rest of the camping stuff. People suffering from claustrophobia prefer rectangular sleeping bags because of the ample room it has to stretch out.

The smallest kinds of camping sleeping bags available are referred to as mummy sleeping bags. Narrowly designed to fit snug from the top to the bottom, this type of sleeping bag sometimes features a hood that allows you to completely wrap yourself in the bag much like a mummy. Some types of mummy sleeping bags can be rolled up conveniently while others will have to be folded. This particular style of camping sleeping bags also tends to retain the most heat.

Tapered camping sleeping bags are similar to the mummy kind in design, but are slightly wider. They also retain heat well as they are close to the body. They are also easy to roll up and carry.

There are several different points you will want to keep in mind when shopping for camping sleeping bags. Before you buy one particular bag over another consider where you will be camping and the time of year. What type of temperatures do you expect? Naturally, camping sleeping bags that are intended for use during the spring or summer will be made of a lighter, more breathable material. Always check the sleeping bag's temperature rating, which can be found on the label, before buying.

Portability is yet another factor to consider when it comes to finding the best camping sleeping bags for your specific needs. Do you plan on carrying the bag inside of a backpack or will you be able to keep it in the car or camper? If you plan on carrying a rucksack, be sure your sleeping bag will roll up nicely and not take up too much space for the rest of your camping stuff to be transported. Pay attention to the materials used for filling in camping sleeping bags as those made from down tend to retain the most heat but they are also the costliest and take quite a while to dry out after getting wet. Synthetic filled sleeping bags are less expensive and will dry quicker if exposed to water; however, they aren't quite as warm as their down filled counterparts.

You will also want to consider the type of zipper the bag has, who will be using the bag, and whether or not it has a hood. Wherever you are going there are definitely camping sleeping bags for everyone to use comfortably during your trip to the wonderful outdoors.
